Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about our plastering and rendering services? We've answered some of the most common queries below. If you can't find what you're looking for, don't hesitate to get in touch - we're always happy to help.

Do you offer free quotes?

Absolutely. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for all our services. We'll visit your property, assess the work needed, and give you a clear breakdown of costs and timescales. No surprises, no pressure to proceed.

How long does a typical plastering project take?

This depends on the size and scope of your project. A single room skimming might take 1–3 days, whilst a full house renovation could take several weeks. We'll give you a realistic timeline during your free quote consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

How long does silicone rendering typically last?

A properly applied silicone render typically lasts 25 to 30 years, making it one of the most durable external finishes available. At Progress Plastering, we exclusively use premium products and proven techniques to ensure your silicone rendering performs to its full potential. Once installed, you can expect your silicone rendering to maintain its appearance and protective properties throughout decades, with minimal intervention beyond occasional cleaning.

How much does silicone rendering cost?

Silicone rendering is a premium product, so costs are higher than basic cement render, but the investment is justified by durability and performance. Pricing depends on several factors: the size of the surface area, the condition of existing renders or substrates, any necessary preparation work, and the specific finish you choose. Rather than quoting generic prices, we provide detailed estimates after assessing your property.

Are you insured?

Yes. We're BAUMIT approved and rated on Checkatrade, which means we meet professional standards and our work is backed by verified customer feedback. We carry full insurance and take pride in delivering accredited, reliable work you can trust.

What's the difference between skimming and full re-plastering?

Skimming involves applying a thin layer of finish plaster (typically 2-3mm) over existing plaster. This works when your walls have minor imperfections but the underlying plaster is properly bonded and structurally intact. Skimming creates a smooth, professional finish ready for decoration. Full re-plastering, by contrast, involves removing all existing plaster back to the bare substrate (brick, block, or stone) and applying fresh plaster in multiple coats. This is necessary when the existing plaster is failing or damaged beyond repair. The key question is whether your existing plaster is sound. If it's firmly adhered and the damage is superficial, skimming will restore it beautifully. If the plaster is failing, hollow, or showing signs of moisture problems, full re-plastering is the proper solution.

What are the main benefits of silicone rendering?

The benefits of silicone rendering are substantial. Firstly, it's exceptionally weather-resistant, protecting your external walls from rain penetration, wind erosion, and UV damage. Secondly, it's highly durable - most quality silicone renders last 25+ years with minimal maintenance, significantly outperforming cheaper alternatives. Thirdly, the breathable nature prevents moisture trapping, which can lead to dampness and structural problems. Silicone rendering also resists moss and algae growth naturally, so your walls stay cleaner without frequent cleaning.

What colours and finishes are available?

Silicone rendering comes in an extensive range of colours and finishes. You can choose from subtle earth tones, classic whites and greys, or bolder contemporary colours -whatever complements your property and local aesthetic. Finishes vary from smooth to textured, allowing you to create the exact look you want. We work with leading products like BAUMIT, which offers excellent colour durability and variety. During your consultation, we can show you samples and discuss which finish and colour work best for your property's character and surroundings.
